Entry Requirements

To be eligible for our School Direct programmes, the following qualifications, experience and attributes are required:

All fee-funded trainees:

  1. A UK honours degree or a recognised equivalent qualification at 2.2 or above
  2. Primary applicants a minimum of GCSE Grade C / Level 4 or above in Science, English & Mathematics. Secondary applicants, a minimum of GCSE Grade C / Level 4 or above in English & Mathematics
  3. All teachers are expected to be competent in Fundamental English and mathematics skills by the completion of ITT. As well as taking account of current qualifications of applicants, an initial basic skills assessment test will form part of the ITT interview process. Any work to address deficiencies should be taken by the trainee in addition to what is covered in the ITE programme.

 

Primary trainees:

 

A minimum of GCSE Grade C / Level 4 or above in Science, English and Mathematics.  Bursaries of £6000 are available to trainees on primary with maths courses with at least grade B maths A level or equivalent.

Secondary trainees:

  1. As above
  2. It is important that you have a strong understanding of the subject you wish to teach, but if your degree subject does not link closely with the teaching subject we're recruiting for, you may be eligible for a Subject Knowledge Enhancement course.   3. A minimum of GCSE Grade C / Level 4 in English and Mathematics.
  4. A minimum of GCSE Grade C/ Level 4 in Science is required for Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics applicants.

Overseas trainees:

Applicants who have studied outside of the UK must check their qualifications  with NARIC (National Academic Recognition Information Centre) before making an application to confirm their qualifications are of an equivalent level to UK GCSEs, A Levels and undergraduate degrees.

Those applying for a salaried place:

  1. A UK Undergraduate honours degree or a recognised equivalent qualification at 2.1 or above
  2. Primary applicants: a minimum of GCSE Grade C / Level 4 or above in Science, English and Mathematics.  Secondary applicants: a minimum of GCSE Grade C / Level 4 in English and Mathematics. NB a minimum of GCSE Grade C / Level 4 in Science is required for Chemistry and Physics applicants.
  3.  It's desirable to have spent approximately two - three years in another career.
  4. For secondary applicants, it is important that you can demonstrate strong understanding of the subject you wish to teach. However you may be eligible for a Subject Knowledge Enhancement course.

All applicants will also need to:

  1. Successfully complete the Professional Skills Tests in Literacy and Numeracy. Information regarding this can be found at: www.education.gov.uk/get-into-teaching/apply-for-teacher-training/skills-tests.aspx
  2. On acceptance to the course you will need to complete a declaration regarding any criminal convictions.  All trainees must gain clearance from the Disclosure and Barring Service regarding suitability to work with young people and a fitness to teach.
